This inspiration for this painting happened as my wife and I sat down in our seats on the ferry to Port Townsend from Coupeville. Looking out the window I saw gulls sitting on the pilings and thought how would they look on some old pilings held together with ropes. I chose to only put one gull in the composition, and playing with the morning light on the pilings. The pilings were my first time using palette knives and they were a lot of fun!
The frame is hand crafted by me using Western Red Cedar heartwood with a stained cotton rope glued into a 3/4” channel in the molding.
This is a large painting, 30” x 40”, with the frame it is about 35” x 45”.
